I was shocked to learn that playing the iPad and Wii would be more exciting than playing outside (or doing anything else for that matter) to my 3-year old!
My son always wanted to play outside – more than anything, so when we introduced these “gadgets” into his life, I thought his excitement would be short lived. We had let him play on www.sesamestreet.org on the computer before, but he quickly grew frustrated with needing our help, so I figured the iPad and Wii would be the same.
Boy was I wrong, he doesn’t need our help. He can navigate the iPad like a pro and after a week of being snowbound in Atlanta, he quickly learned how to manage the Wii controller. I told myself, “wait until it is nice outside again, he’ll be dying to get out there.” Nope, that isn’t the case. Once the weather started warming up, I had to MAKE him go outside and he kept asking if he could go back inside to play Wii.
Luckily, these are devices I can easily control. I just place them out of his reach. Luckily, at three, he is easily distracted by things like bicycles, baseball, soccer and dozens of other outside toys and games. But what happens when he is five, six, 10 or even 15? How will I “hide” the technology that is fun, available and often times helpful?
The statistics are alarming. According to a recent report, Always Connected, children ages 8-10 spend about five and a half hours each day using media, but are actually exposed to an alarming eight hours a day because they’re media multitasking, like watching cartoons while using a portable gaming system. I used to think, how can that be? My son watches about 30 minutes of TV a day, if that. Then came winter and gadgets. Now, I can easily see how by the time he is old enough to understand the Internet, he will be consumed by the options.
So, imagine my excitement when I learned that when the Internet starts to impact my family, I WILL BE IN CONTROL. I will lead by example. I will teach my kids proper Internet etiquette. I will use myi (www.myi.com) and you can use it too. This spring a new service will be available to help families take back family time. Myi is a service that sits on your home network and gives you the ability to make the Internet yours. You can set up the “Bedtime” app where the Internet actually TURNS OFF at a certain time every night. No more stories of kids waking up after mom and dad go to bed to Skpe with their friends! You can work with your kids’ teachers to determine the best websites to use with the “Study Hall” app – no more “Facebooking” during study time! You can even schedule “Family Time” to encourage everyone to get back outside.
Friend, share with you a good thing
